Most players will notice the same thing after a few hours in Return of the Ancients: Patch 0.5 is smaller on paper, but it asks you to touch a lot of different systems. The Runes of Aldur league has only eight challenges, not the old forty-challenge grind people remember from Path of Exile 1. That sounds light, until you start juggling rune recipes, Atlas points, Ascendancy trials, Unique identification, Verisium crafting, and Pinnacle bosses. It also makes ordinary drops and PoE2 Items feel more tied to progress, because several goals are about preparation rather than raw killing speed.
How the eight challenges actually feel The challenge list is clean: The Runeseeker, The Hunter, The Ascendant, The Master, The Reliquarian, The Artisan, The Cartographer, and The Vanquisher. The Runeseeker is the league-flavoured one. You inscribe rune recipes at Runic Remnants, working through 2-rune, 3-rune, 4-rune, 5-rune, 6-rune, and 7-or-more-rune patterns. Don't skip these while levelling. It's tempting, especially when you're rushing the campaign, but you'll hate the backtracking later. The Hunter is much simpler. It asks you to kill six campaign bosses, so it's best handled by clearing optional zones instead of sprinting past them. Progression gates players shouldn't waste The Ascendant is where a lot of people get careless. You need all 8 Ascendancy Points, and the later trials depend on the right Djinn Barya. The third trial needs level 60 or higher with three floors. The fourth needs level 75 or higher with four floors, then Zarok, the Temporal. Burning a good Barya on the wrong setup is just painful. The Master is the long haul, since it asks for level 90. The Reliquarian is easier to plan around: identify 50 Unique Items. If you vendor Uniques while they're still unidentified, you're throwing away free challenge credit. Runic Ward changes the build conversation Kalguuran Gems are the big mechanical twist. They don't use mana or life like standard skills. They spend Runic Ward, have no attribute requirements, and level through Thaumaturgic Flax rather than experience. That's neat, but it's also a trap if you don't unlock the support system behind them. The Runeseeker quest leads to the Runic Vault in the Lost Catacombs, which unlocks the Verisium Anvil. From there, Runeforged armour becomes the reliable way to build Ward. Skills like Leylines, Remnants of Kalguur, and Verisium Manifestations also reserve 30 Spirit, so you can't just socket everything and hope it works. Rewards, crafting, and a sensible route The cosmetic path is pretty clear even if the non-armour reward names are messy. Boots unlock at 2 challenges, gloves at 4, body armour or chest at 6, and the helmet at 8. Some sources call the first reward a trophy, while others describe Challenger Statues at each milestone. Either way, the Knight of Aldur armour is the real chase. A practical route is Hunter and Reliquarian first, then Runeseeker and Ascendant, with Cartographer, Artisan, Master, and Vanquisher left for stronger mapping gear.
